The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

My third time trying this one; I finally finished it. Idyllic and horrifying at the same time. Reminds me thematically of Bradbury’s “Dandelion Wine“. (Here’s a link.) #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

Circe
Everyone loves this book but me. I feel left out! Circe is a fascinating character to be sure but the story just wasn’t my taste. #25wordbookreviews (link to Amazon) Continue reading

Darius the Great is Not Okay
The very best of YA; tells of a tender friendship between teen boys both dealing with Big Things in their lives, including depression and bullying. #25wordbookreviews (link to amazon) Continue reading

Pep Talks for Writers by Grant Faulkner

Nothing new; some of them are a reach (start a gratitude jar? Really?). Might be better to read weekly rather than straight through like me. #25wordbookreviews PS – here’s a link to it if this review didn’t completely turn you off. Continue reading

Becoming
Michelle read this audiobook (at 1.5x speed — she’s pretty slow!) and while nothing all that controversial was revealed, she’s still an inspiration to me. #25wordbookreview Continue reading

The Long Goodbye: A Memoir by Meghan O’Rourke

Her mother died of cancer. So did mine. That’s where our similarities end, so it was hard for me to relate. Great poetic writing, though. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

Small Fry by Lisa Brennan-Jobs
If you think you already know that Steve Jobs was a terrible father, you’ve no idea. 381 pages of atrocious behavior. Two pages of remorse. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

The Bus on Thursday by Shirley Barrett
Some crazy shit happens in this book, prepare yourself. But the voice is snappy and entertaining enough to make the roller coaster an enjoyable ride. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli
I’m glad kids today have more diversity in the stories they read but otherwise this is simply a book for teens. Not really for adults. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

The Friend by Sigrid Nunez
Gorgeous cover, beautiful writing, solid premise. But it suffers from what I’m not supposed to care about but really do — a terribly unlikable main character. [One of my reading goals for this year is to write a 25-word review for every book I read. Consider this the first installment.] Continue reading
About Me
I’m Victoria Griffith and I am enthusiastic about a LOT of things. Pine trees and mushrooms and the desert. Ocotillos, motorcycles, travel, and photography. Friendship and writing and books and surviving the love of your life’s terminal diagnosis. I blog about some of these things here, mostly about books and writing, but about the other stuff now and then too.
I was born in Paterson NJ, call Seattle WA my home, and spend the winters in the desert of Southern California. I try to get out to see as much of the world as time and money will allow.
