Small Fry by Lisa Brennan-Jobs
If you think you already know that Steve Jobs was a terrible father, you’ve no idea. 381 pages of atrocious behavior. Two pages of remorse. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

The Bus on Thursday by Shirley Barrett
Some crazy shit happens in this book, prepare yourself. But the voice is snappy and entertaining enough to make the roller coaster an enjoyable ride. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

Breaking Rules for a Cause
I have a hard and fast rule not to pay more than $10 for a kindle edition of a book. It’s a remnant of my time in publishing. I value books and writing greatly (obviously), and want writers to be able to make a living writing books — I buy lots of books to support… Continue reading

Reading Radar

On my radar this week: Started the audiobook of Daring Greatly by Brene Brown. Partially because I want to start off the year with something thoughtful, partly because I have a grudge against Brene Brown that I feel like I have to get rid of. I don’t know why. Anyway, I’m having some trouble focusing on… Continue reading

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli
I’m glad kids today have more diversity in the stories they read but otherwise this is simply a book for teens. Not really for adults. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

The Friend by Sigrid Nunez
Gorgeous cover, beautiful writing, solid premise. But it suffers from what I’m not supposed to care about but really do — a terribly unlikable main character. [One of my reading goals for this year is to write a 25-word review for every book I read. Consider this the first installment.] Continue reading

#tbt: What’s Eating Gilbert Grape by Peter Hedges

It’s 1991, and I’m lying on my bed in my dorm room. I’m a freshman in college, and it’s the first time I’ve been on my own, away from my close but incredibly dysfunctional family. I’m making friends, sort of, but I don’t feel like I entirely click with my housemates. I’m shy. I’m overweight… Continue reading

Combating Despair with Facts
The other day I was in a coffee shop working on my laptop and I overheard an interesting conversation happening next to me. A woman in her 30s was having coffee and talking with two older adults, who I assume are her parents. The woman’s talking about politics and about how terrible this administration is… Continue reading

I love autumn.

Went for a late afternoon motorcycle ride in the sunshine today. Stopped at a coffee shop and sat and read the new Kate Atkinson for a little bit. I’m developing a relationship with KA — I don’t love everything she writes, and she’s not really easy for me to read. But some of her books… Continue reading

Summer (non)Reading
The already too-short Seattle summer is coming to a premature end due to dense wildfire smoke. While this makes me all kinds of sad, one positive aspect is that it’s put me back into the groove of reading. I haven’t read a ton these past few months, slowing down my pace of book consumption to… Continue reading
About Me
I’m Victoria Griffith and I am enthusiastic about a LOT of things. Pine trees and mushrooms and the desert. Mountains and motorcycles, travel and photography. Friendship and writing and books and surviving the love of your life’s terminal diagnosis.
I read constantly, think about reading obsessively, and have strong opinions about what makes a great memoir. I write about books here, and I’m working on one of my own.
I was born in Paterson, NJ, call Seattle home, and spend winters in the desert of Southern California, where the light is different and the ocotillos are doing something extraordinary. I try to get out and see as much of the world as time and money will allow.
