Natural Causes
This started out great, blowing my mind with contrarian thoughts on health care — but it devolved into a bit on nonsense later on. Still interesting. #25wordbookreview (link) Continue reading

Golden State
Fascinating idea — a world where lying is the ultimate crime and reality exists only when caught on camera. Slow sometimes, but a great read. #25wordbookreviews (Amazon link) Continue reading

The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

My third time trying this one; I finally finished it. Idyllic and horrifying at the same time. Reminds me thematically of Bradbury’s “Dandelion Wine“. (Here’s a link.) #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

Circe
Everyone loves this book but me. I feel left out! Circe is a fascinating character to be sure but the story just wasn’t my taste. #25wordbookreviews (link to Amazon) Continue reading

Snow day
It’s Day 2 of a city-wide shutdown due to a measly 4 inches of snow. (I know this sounds ridiculous, but 1) it rarely ever snows here so we’re not well-prepared and 2) it’s very hilly in Seattle. Every time it snows, people put together hilarious montages like this from sitting on their decks… Continue reading

Darius the Great is Not Okay
The very best of YA; tells of a tender friendship between teen boys both dealing with Big Things in their lives, including depression and bullying. #25wordbookreviews (link to amazon) Continue reading

Becoming
Michelle read this audiobook (at 1.5x speed — she’s pretty slow!) and while nothing all that controversial was revealed, she’s still an inspiration to me. #25wordbookreview Continue reading

The Long Goodbye: A Memoir by Meghan O’Rourke

Her mother died of cancer. So did mine. That’s where our similarities end, so it was hard for me to relate. Great poetic writing, though. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

Reading Radar
I’m apparently hanging out in the airport all day today. I’m trying to fly from Seattle to NYC but my flight has been delayed 3 hours so far and I’m not confident about it even then. It sucks, yes, but at least I’m some place warm and I have a great reader friend here… Continue reading

Small Fry by Lisa Brennan-Jobs
If you think you already know that Steve Jobs was a terrible father, you’ve no idea. 381 pages of atrocious behavior. Two pages of remorse. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading
About Me
I’m Victoria Griffith and I am enthusiastic about a LOT of things. Pine trees and mushrooms and the desert. Mountains and motorcycles, travel and photography. Friendship and writing and books and surviving the love of your life’s terminal diagnosis.
I read constantly, think about reading obsessively, and have strong opinions about what makes a great memoir. I write about books here, and I’m working on one of my own.
I was born in Paterson, NJ, call Seattle home, and spend winters in the desert of Southern California, where the light is different and the ocotillos are doing something extraordinary. I try to get out and see as much of the world as time and money will allow.
