  • Breaking Rules for a Cause

I have a hard and fast rule not to pay more than $10 for a kindle edition of a book. It’s a remnant of my time in publishing. I value books and writing greatly (obviously), and want writers to be able to make a living writing books — I buy lots of books to support Continue reading

  • Reading Radar

    Reading Radar

On my radar this week: Started the audiobook of Daring Greatly by Brene Brown. Partially because I want to start off the year with something thoughtful, partly because I have a grudge against Brene Brown that I feel like I have to get rid of. I don’t know why. Anyway, I’m having some trouble focusing on Continue reading

  • Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

I’m glad kids today have more diversity in the stories they read but otherwise this is simply a book for teens. Not really for adults. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

  • The Friend by Sigrid Nunez

Gorgeous cover, beautiful writing, solid premise. But it suffers from what I’m not supposed to care about but really do — a terribly unlikable main character. [One of my reading goals for this year is to write a 25-word review for every book I read. Consider this the first installment.] Continue reading

  • #tbt: What’s Eating Gilbert Grape by Peter Hedges

#tbt: What’s Eating Gilbert Grape by Peter Hedges

It’s 1991, and I’m lying on my bed in my dorm room. I’m a freshman in college, and it’s the first time I’ve been on my own, away from my close but incredibly dysfunctional family. I’m making friends, sort of, but I don’t feel like I entirely click with my housemates. I’m shy. I’m overweight Continue reading

  • Combating Despair with Facts

The other day I was in a coffee shop working on my laptop and I overheard an interesting conversation happening next to me. A woman in her 30s was having coffee and talking with two older adults, who I assume are her parents. The woman’s talking about politics and about how terrible this administration is Continue reading

  • What I’m Reading

I’m doing a shitty job of hitting my goal of writing weekly blog posts. We’re 12 weeks into the new year and I’ve only written eight posts (including this one) so I’m at 67%, which is like a D+. Gotta step up my game. Anyway, I may not have been writing but I have been Continue reading

  • Once Is Never Enough

One of my reading goals this year is to reread some old favorites, so I was pretty stoked when I found out that this week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic (from thatartsyreadergirl.com) is Books I Could Reread Forever. Because I’ve already got a list of those going! But it was also a good excuse to go Continue reading

  • Thoughts on Fiction

My coworkers and I were chatting about books earlier this week and I found myself trying to explain my love of fiction, maybe for the first time ever. I’ve never had to explain this to anyone before. I assumed most people read fiction for fun. Maybe they do. I probably read more fiction than any Continue reading

  • LGBT YA Sci-Fi/Fantasy: It’s a Thing, and I Love It

Toward the end of 2016, I was browsing for something to read—something to finish out the year right, to carry me through the holidays and into my weeklong staycation between Christmas and New Year’s. I hit all the usuals—the Kindle new releases and daily deals pages, my Amazon “to read” wish list, my Goodreads “Want to Continue reading

About Me

I’m Victoria Griffith and I am enthusiastic about a LOT of things. Pine trees and mushrooms and the desert. Ocotillos, motorcycles, travel, and photography. Friendship and writing and books and surviving the love of your life’s terminal diagnosis. I blog about some of these things here, mostly about books and writing, but about the other stuff now and then too.

I was born in Paterson NJ, call Seattle WA my home, and spend the winters in the desert of Southern California. I try to get out to see as much of the world as time and money will allow.
