The Long Goodbye: A Memoir by Meghan O’Rourke

Her mother died of cancer. So did mine. That’s where our similarities end, so it was hard for me to relate. Great poetic writing, though. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

Reading Radar
I’m apparently hanging out in the airport all day today. I’m trying to fly from Seattle to NYC but my flight has been delayed 3 hours so far and I’m not confident about it even then. It sucks, yes, but at least I’m some place warm and I have a great reader friend here Continue reading

Small Fry by Lisa Brennan-Jobs
If you think you already know that Steve Jobs was a terrible father, you’ve no idea. 381 pages of atrocious behavior. Two pages of remorse. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

RIP Mary Oliver

One of my favorite poets has died. Here is her obituary in the NY Times. And here is my favorite poem by her–possibly my favorite poem, period: Wild Geese You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have Continue reading

The Bus on Thursday by Shirley Barrett
Some crazy shit happens in this book, prepare yourself. But the voice is snappy and entertaining enough to make the roller coaster an enjoyable ride. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

Breaking Rules for a Cause
I have a hard and fast rule not to pay more than $10 for a kindle edition of a book. It’s a remnant of my time in publishing. I value books and writing greatly (obviously), and want writers to be able to make a living writing books — I buy lots of books to support Continue reading

Reading Radar

On my radar this week: Started the audiobook of Daring Greatly by Brene Brown. Partially because I want to start off the year with something thoughtful, partly because I have a grudge against Brene Brown that I feel like I have to get rid of. I don’t know why. Anyway, I’m having some trouble focusing on Continue reading

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli
I’m glad kids today have more diversity in the stories they read but otherwise this is simply a book for teens. Not really for adults. #25wordbookreviews Continue reading

Vic’s 2019 Reading Goals
When it came to my reading goals, I did not do very well in 2018. I had five goals and I only made one of them. I wanted to read all of Sherman Alexie’s books — I only read one before the #metoo accusations surfaced about how he’d abused his power with female authors and Continue reading

The Friend by Sigrid Nunez
Gorgeous cover, beautiful writing, solid premise. But it suffers from what I’m not supposed to care about but really do — a terribly unlikable main character. [One of my reading goals for this year is to write a 25-word review for every book I read. Consider this the first installment.] Continue reading
About Me
I’m Victoria Griffith and I am enthusiastic about a LOT of things. Pine trees and mushrooms and the desert. Ocotillos, motorcycles, travel, and photography. Friendship and writing and books and surviving the love of your life’s terminal diagnosis. I blog about some of these things here, mostly about books and writing, but about the other stuff now and then too.
I was born in Paterson NJ, call Seattle WA my home, and spend the winters in the desert of Southern California. I try to get out to see as much of the world as time and money will allow.
